“Pio Cesare is what I call a ‘lighthouse winery’. Steadfast and standing tall among the rest, it floods the landscape with inspiration and light for a slew of smaller, boutique wineries looking to find their way. Among the most historic brands in Alba, Pio Cesare has worked hard to promote Barolo and the territory of the Langhe across the globe. Their tireless efforts have been instrumental in creating a unified Barolo identity.” – Monica Larner on Pio Cesare, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, June 2013.

#35 Top 100

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Barbera
VINEYARD: The fruit comes from family-owned vineyards in Serraluga d’Alba (Ornato and Colombaro), Sinio, Diano d’Alba and Grinzane Cavour along with other vineyards belonging to “historical suppliers” who have sold grapes to Pio Cesare for generations. These suppliers work their vineyards according to the winery’s directions and strict quality controls.
PRODUCTION: The juice sees 15 days of skin contact in stainless steel temperature-controlled fermenters. Following fermentation, the wine is moved to French oak for 18 months, 30% in medium-toasted barriques and 70% in 20 to 50 hectoliter casks.
TASTING NOTES: The Barbera grapes grown in the Barolo area give full structure and plummy, spicy, complex flavours. You’ll find blackberries in the aroma and a hint of toasted tobacco. It ages quite well.
#38 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2021
This is bright and focused, exuding blackberry, black cherry and violet flavors. Balanced and firm on the long, fruit- and earth-tinged aftertaste. Drink now through 2025.

2017 Pio Cesare Barolo DOCG
SKU #200626 6X750ML $82.95 wholesale spec
GRAPE VARIETY: 100% NEBBIOLO
VINEYARDS: Our Family owned Vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba (Ornato, Collaretto e Lirano), Grinzane Cavour (Gustava e Carzello), La Morra (Roncaglie), Barolo – Novello (Ravera) and from the 2015 vintage the recently acquired in Monforte (Mosconi). It has been produced since ever from grapes coming from different regions. This is the classic traditional “Formula” used by the ancient Barolo Families to produce a Barolo which embraces and melts each of the peculiar characters of the different vineyards and terroirs of the Barolo area.
TASTING NOTES: A classic style Barolo. Excellent structure, harmony and elegance. Soft tannins and balanced fruit. Approachable, but with a very long ageing potential.
Barolo is a great wine, which should not be described as a“basic” or “regular” Barolo, simply because it does not have any additional indication on the label.
Rating: 94(+) Robert Parker - This is the wine to buy in commemoration of the 140th anniversary (1881-2021) of the historic house of Pio Cesare. The most traditional and classic of the wines in this important portfolio, the 2017 Barolo is packaged in a retro label that speaks to all the grandeur of this important Italian wine appellation. The wine imparts delicate and fine tones of wild fruit, cassis, tar, smoke and crushed rose. The wine is buttoned up and straitlaced, especially now in its youth.

2017 Pio Cesare Ornato Vineyard Barolo DOCG
SKU #227614 6X750 $143.88 wholesale spec
GRAPE VARIETY: 100% NEBBIOLO
VINEYARDS: From a small selection of “nebbioli” from our Family-owned vineyards of Cascina Ornato in Serralunga d’Alba, one of the most historical and prestigious areas of the entire Barolo region very well known for great structure, tannins, freshness and longevity.
TASTING NOTES: The very first Single Vineyard Barolo produced by the Pio Family, for the first time in 1985. Great structure, power, concentration, with a very long life. Produced in small quantities.
Extremely perfumed with dark berries, cherries, strawberries and crushed stones. Full-bodied with chewy, polished tannins that are muscular. Fantastic structure to this young Barolo, as well as great length. It grows on the palate with ease. Truly impressive. Incredible. Try after 2025. 98 points James Suckling

2017 Pio Cesare Mosconi Vineyard Barolo DOCG
SKU #143350 3X750 $159.95 wholesale spec
GRAPE VARIETY: 100% NEBBIOLO
VINEYARDS: Pio Cesare’s single-vineyard Barolo Mosconi comes from a small selection of the oldest Nebbiolo vines of the family-owned vineyards in Monforte d’Alba, one of the most prestigious areas of the entire Barolo region. The area is known for wines with great complexity, elegance and longevity.
TASTING NOTES: This wine has only been produced since 2015 by Pio Boffa, for his 60th birthday, after purchasing the 10 hectares of Mosconi. This is a deep and complex wine – age-worthy Nebbiolo of the highest order. It is completely reasonable to suggest that its prime drinking window is two decades from now.
“Subtle aromas of crushed stone and cherry with dried strawberry and white truffle, following through to a full body. Yet it is tight and very tannic with a fine-grained texture and a long, intense finish. A superb combination of structure and finesse. Very typical for Mosconi and the Ginestre area. Exceptional. Try after 2026.” 98 points, JamesSuckling.com, Apr 2021
