Classics from Pio Cesare

"There is nothing REGULAR about Barolo and Barbaresco". Famous words from the Late Pio Boffa. Here we have his two classics. 2017 Barolo and 2018 Barbresco. 100% Estate fruit from the best vineyards in the region! These wines are drinkable now with potential to age for decades. Don't miss stocking these beauties for the busy winter season!

“Pio Cesare is what I call a ‘lighthouse winery’. Steadfast and standing tall among the rest, it floods the landscape with inspiration and light for a slew of smaller, boutique wineries looking to find their way. Among the most historic brands in Alba, Pio Cesare has worked hard to promote Barolo and the territory of the Langhe across the globe. Their tireless efforts have been instrumental in creating a unified Barolo identity.” – Monica Larner on Pio Cesare, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, June 2013

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% NEBBIOLO

VINEYARDS: Our family-owned vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba (Ornato, La Serra and Briccolina), Grinzane Cavour (Gustava and Garretti), La Morra (Roncaglie), Novello (Ravera) and, since the 2015 vintage, our recently acquired vineyard in Monforte (Mosconi). This wine has been always and traditionally produced by our Family with grapes coming from different regions. This is the classic “formula” used by the ancient Barolo Families to produce a wine which embraces and combines each of the unique characteristics of the different vineyards and terroirs of the Barolo area.

TASTING NOTES:  A classic style Barolo. Excellent structure, harmony and elegance. Soft tannins and balanced fruit. Approachable, but with a very long ageing potential. Barolo is a great wine, which should not be described as a “basic” or “regular” Barolo, simply because it does not have any additional indication on the label.

This is the wine to buy in commemoration of the 140th anniversary (1881-2021) of the historic house of Pio Cesare. The most traditional and classic of the wines in this important portfolio, the 2017 Barolo is packaged in a retro label that speaks to all the grandeur of this important Italian wine appellation. The wine imparts delicate and fine tones of wild fruit, cassis, tar, smoke and crushed rose. The wine is buttoned up and straitlaced, especially now in its youth.  Rating: 94(+) Parker
