Winemaking Approach

Believing that a grapevine should be grown in healthy soil that supports all the nutrient needs of the plant, Frog's Leap has been farming organically since 1988. We also believe that most of the great and historic wines of the world have been made from non-irrigated grapevines, and to that end Frog’s Leap farms all of its vineyards without irrigation.
We adhere to the premise that the greatest wines are those that most truly reflect their soil, climate and circumstance (collectively referred to as “terroir”), and that it is the winemaker’s role to simply stand back and let the natural beauty of the grapes show through.
We don't make great wine, we grow it.

Winemaker Notes

The harvest of the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes at our Rossi and Chavez-Leeds vineyards began at the end of September. 2018 was a long, cool vintage with no heat spikes. It was a gentle and even-paced harvest which was heartily welcomed after the challenges of the fires in the prior year. This 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon shows aromas of blackcurrant fruit, an underlying hint of earth and a dusty character that is classic to Rutherford Cabernet. The palate invites one in offering bright acidity and well-integrated tannins that make this wine approachable in its youth. Its character also hints at beautiful aging potential. J.W.

93 points Decanter-Beaming and pure, with aromas of fragrant red fruits, fresh flowers and a pleasant hint of ash. Elegant and bright on the palate, with a finely-drawn, precise acidity. Frog's Leap has always placed itself among producers that champion precision and elegance, and the 2018 is a particularly crystalline example of this.

92 points James Suckling-Plums, earth, dried herbs, lavender and bark on the nose. Full body with chewy tannins. Firm and tight. Quite angular. Fresh and bright. Needs time to soften. Better after 2023.
