Chêne Bleu

Rhone, France

The Story:

The world’s first “Super Rhone”,  Chene Bleu farms clayey-chalk vineyards at a crossroads of four Rhône Appellations near Gigondas, though at a higher elevation ~550m. The vineyards are isolated, surrounded by trees in a UNESCO protected biome, which shields them from pollution and drifting agricultural chemicals, and helps provide a pure foundation for the estate’s biodynamic viticulture.

The style of Chene Bleu is not defined by the existing appellations, because of the atypical characteristics of their terroir, so they opt to present the wines as Vins de Pays, earning them novel ‘Super Rhone’ status in the eyes of critics and wine-lovers.

Vines are tended meticulously, parcelle by parcelle, delicately hand-picked, and fermented carefully in Chene Bleu’s gravity-flow winery.

Syrah (63%), Grenache (35%), Viognier (2%)

Restrained but unwavering elegance.  Our Syrah blend is named Héloïse for its balance of concentration and restraint, and its ripe, supple texture.  Our fine Syrahs blend beautifully with the highly perfumed Grenache, but also blossom with the floral notes of our high-altitude Viognier, bringing Héloïse stylistically closer to its cousins in the Northern Rhône.

Alcohol: 14%, RS: 0.6g/l, Barrel Ageing: 18 months new/old French barrique

Grenache (85%), Syrah (15%)

We named our Grenache blend ABÉLARD to reflect its forceful, brooding intensity.  Our mature (25 year old plus) Grenache flourishes at this high altitude and at harvest the scent of wild strawberries and black fruit wafts through the winery.  We strive to capture and showcase this highly perfumed aroma.

Alcohol: 14.5%,  RS: 0.5g/l,  Barrel Ageing: 18 months in new/old French barrique

Grenache (75%), Syrah (25%)

In real life, Astralabe was the son of famous medieval lovers Héloïse and Abélard, who gave their names to our twin flagship reds. This cuvée, younger in age and in spirit than its complex collectible “parents,” is our vibrant yet easy-drinking blend. Grenache noir, over 40 years old north-west facing, at 530m. Syrah over 30 years old, south-west facing at 540m.

Alcohol: 13.5%,  RS: 0.4g/l,  Barrel Ageing: 12 months in French oak

Grenache (60%), Syrah (25%), Mourvèdre (15%)

Our inaugural GSM blend, aged four years before release, reflects the profound and timeless themes in Cicero’s On the Republic which it’s named after. We painstakingly restored our vineyards over more than a decade, without cutting corners, remaining devoted to the purity and purpose of our pursuit, rather than immediate, easy reward.

Alcohol: 13%,  RS: 0.8g/l,  Barrel Ageing: 8 months in French demi-muids (600L)

Roussanne (65%), Grenache blanc (29%), Marsanne (5%), Touch of Viognier

Perfumed and powerful, Aliot is our rich, oak-aged, age-worthy Roussanne blend. High altitude and a protracted ripening season led us to consider planting whites, despite our southern latitude. Many people discouraged us, but fortunately we followed our judgment, and our flagship white has won awards from its first vintage.
